Bacon-Wrapped Turducken

Bacon-Wrapped Turducken: Meat-lover's dream or carnivorous overload? Turducken is a whole chicken stuffed into a whole duck stuffed into a whole turkey. Wrap bacon around the turducken and you have yourself a meat feast! Turducken is a popular, traditional holiday dish from England. It was especially popular in the 18th century. The bacon addition is more of a recent western trend.

Bacon-Wrapped Turducken can be considered bizarre due to the overload of one thing, which in this case is meat. It is common to pair meat with potatoes and vegetables, providing a balanced meal with variety. Bacon-wrapped turducken pairs meat with meat with more meat, creating a caloric catastrophe with 25,000 calories in the entire turducken. The four meat combo may seem unnecessary to many people who would be quite satisfied with just a chicken, turkey, or duck on its own. Even many meat-lovers who like pairing different meats together such as sausage and pepperoni on pizza, or a bacon cheeseburger, may find this to be too much. And finally, what is essentially three birds stuffed into each other wrapped in strips of pig meat, isn't a very appealing process or appetizing image for many. But who knows? Maybe it's delicious. But for now, I will keep my meats separate. :)

Bat Paste

I can't say I've spent many minutes in my life thinking about bats. But when I have, it has usually been in the context of vampires, Halloween, or rabies. Whatever my thoughts of bats might have been it certainly never involved food. So I was a little taken aback when I came across bat paste. Yup, BAT PASTE.

Bat paste is considered quite the delicacy in Thailand. Step one of preparing bat paste is catching a live bat. Once you get hold of said bat, it is time to drop it into a vat of boiling milk. Cooking times tend to vary bat to bat, but the idea is to get the bat soft enough to mash it into a paste along with herbs and spices of choice. And just like that bat paste is created before your eyes.

Bat paste can be considered a bizarre food because many people fear bats. Due to the fact that they sleep in dark spaces, and are often associated with dark folklore, bats are generally considered undesirable. At the very least many people see bats as dirty creatures that carry many diseases. Furthermore, the method of boiling a creature live and then mashing it into paste is probably a little too hardcore for people who just want to eat dinner. I, myself, will stick to chicken. :)
